Although only recently approved for use in the U.S., gastric banding with the LAP-BAND® has nonetheless enjoyed a long track record of success, with over 60,000 procedures having been performed worldwide. The operation is done for morbid obesity, producing a loss of 50-60% excess body weight over 18-24 months. The surgery is performed laparoscopically through five tiny incisions, and involves placement of a thin band-like device around the upper part of the stomach. When the band is placed, a small upper stomach pouch is created; causing a sensation of fullness after a small amount of food is ingested. In addition, the band itself produces a delay in the passage of food from this upper stomach pouch, prolonging the feeling of fullness. The band can be adjusted in an outpatient setting, with adjustments being guided by the patient’s desired weight loss. This operation requires only an overnight stay, and patients are typically back to work within several days.

The LAP-BAND® System may be right for you if:

• You are at least 18 years old.

• You are more than 100 lbs. over your ideal body weight or you have a Body Mass Index (BMI) of over 40. If you do not meet the BMI or weight criteria, you still may be considered for surgery if your BMI is over 35 and you are suffering from serious health problems related to obesity. Research shows that selective patients with a BMI of 30-35 may also qualify and benefit from bariatric surgery.

• You have been overweight for more than 5 years.

• Your serious attempts to lose weight have had only short-term success.

• You do not have any other disease that may have caused your obesity.

• You are prepared to make substantial changes in your eating habits and lifestyle.

• You are willing to continue being monitored by the specialist who is treating you.

• You do not drink alcohol in excess.
